Squarespace to Shopify Migration Service
We move Squarespace stores to Shopify in 1–2 weeks for most stores: products and variants, customers, order history, blog posts and pages — plus a 301 redirect for every Squarespace URL Google has indexed. Your Squarespace site keeps selling until the domain switches to Shopify. Squarespace’s own exports leave a lot behind — store pages, product images and the design among them — so we move the rest from the live site, not only from the export files. Customer passwords cannot move on any platform: customers set a new one from an invite, or sign in with a one-time email code through Shopify’s new customer accounts. Pricing is hourly from $30/hr, with a fixed, itemized estimate agreed after a free audit of your store.
Squarespace is built for websites that also sell; Shopify is built for stores. Most of the work in this move is about what Squarespace does not hand over. Its site export is a WordPress file with your pages and a single blog — store pages, product blocks, video and audio blocks, style settings and custom CSS stay behind. Products come out in a separate spreadsheet without their images. A Squarespace product can also carry more options than Shopify allows. And the URLs change shape: on Squarespace 7.1 a product lives at /shop/p/linen-dress, on Shopify at /products/linen-dress. Import apps copy what they can read; the hours in a real migration go into the gaps — rebuilding what the exports skip, and redirecting every old URL so your rankings and backlinks follow the store.
What moves from Squarespace — and where it lands in Shopify
| On Squarespace | On Shopify | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Physical products and variants up to 6 options and 250 variants per product; the product export has no images |
Products with up to 3 options and 2,048 variants each | Products with four or more options are restructured — options combined or the product split — and listed in the audit before anything moves. Product and variant images are taken from the live store and attached to the right variants. |
| Download products not part of the product export, which covers physical and service products |
Products delivered through a digital downloads app | Files, prices and descriptions are re-created, and every download is tested with a real test order. |
| Service products and product forms custom fields such as engraving text or gift notes |
Products without shipping; form fields as line-item properties on the product form | Every form field is rebuilt and tested through cart and checkout, so the answers reach the order. |
| Store categories /shop?category=… filters or /shop/category pages |
Collections plus navigation menus | Each category becomes a collection; category pages that get search traffic get a 301. |
| Customers | Customers with addresses and tags | Imported with their addresses and tags, so your segments carry over. |
| Orders | Historical orders | Imported as past orders without emailing customers, so order history and customer lifetime value stay intact. |
| Blog posts one blog per export; post URLs often carry dates |
Blog articles (/blogs/news/…) | Text, titles and meta descriptions moved; images re-uploaded to Shopify, so posts no longer depend on the Squarespace site you are closing. A second blog is moved post by post. |
| Pages /about, /contact |
Pages (/pages/about) | Text and images moved; the page types the export skips — index, portfolio and album pages — are rebuilt as theme sections. |
| Template, style settings and custom CSS | Online Store 2.0 theme | Squarespace templates do not run on Shopify, so the design is rebuilt — as it is, or redesigned if the template is part of the problem. |
| Member areas, subscriptions, scheduling | Apps: a membership app, Shopify Subscriptions or another subscription app, a booking app | Each one is matched to an app in the audit, with its monthly cost, before you commit. |
Squarespace URLs vs Shopify URLs: the redirect map
Shopify’s URL structure is fixed, so almost every Squarespace page moves to a new address:
| Page type | Typical Squarespace URL | Shopify URL |
|---|---|---|
| Product | /shop/p/linen-dress | /products/linen-dress |
| Store page | /shop | /collections/all |
| Category | /shop/dresses or /shop?category=Dresses | /collections/dresses |
| Blog post | /blog/2024/3/15/how-to-style-linen | /blogs/news/how-to-style-linen |
| Page | /about | /pages/about |
We crawl the live Squarespace site and pull every URL Google has indexed from your Search Console, match each one to its Shopify address and import the list as 301 redirects. Redirects you already set up in Squarespace’s URL mappings are carried over as well, so older links that already pointed somewhere keep working. Three Shopify rules shape the plan. A redirect only works from a URL that returns 404 on Shopify — so the map goes live at the moment the domain switches, not before. Shopify redirects do not reliably match query strings, so the /shop?category=… filter links are covered by redirecting the store page itself, while category pages with their own URL get a redirect each. And a store can hold up to 100,000 redirects (20 million on Shopify Plus), far more than a Squarespace store needs. After launch we resubmit the sitemap in Search Console and watch the 404 report for 30 days, so a missed URL gets its redirect in days, not months.
How a Squarespace migration runs
- Audit and mapping (days 1–2). We inventory pages, products and their options, download and service products, product forms, member areas, integrations and every indexed URL, and send you the migration map with a fixed estimate before any work starts.
- Staging build (week 1). The theme, settings, shipping and taxes are set up on a Shopify store your customers cannot see, while Squarespace keeps selling.
- Data import and redirects (weeks 1–2). Products, images, customers, orders, blog posts and pages are imported and checked against Squarespace counts; the 301 map is prepared and reviewed.
- Parallel QA (week 2). Checkout, shipping rates, taxes, product forms, download delivery, notification emails and integrations are tested with real test orders on desktop and mobile.
- Cutover (one evening). The domain moves to Shopify in your lowest-traffic window, the redirects go live, and a final import picks up the orders and customers created since the first one. Squarespace stays frozen as a fallback for 30 days.
Your store never stops taking orders: the switch is a domain change, not a rebuild in place.
Keeping your domain
If you bought your domain through Squarespace, it can stay registered there. We connect it to Shopify by changing its DNS records, so you do not have to transfer the registration or wait out a transfer lock. Email that runs on the same domain keeps working as long as its MX records stay as they are — we check them before the switch.
What a Squarespace to Shopify migration costs
Pricing is hourly and transparent — from $30/hr, with a fixed estimate agreed before we start. Most Squarespace stores are small, so the hours depend less on the number of products than on what the exports leave behind: products with four or more options, download products, product forms, member areas or subscriptions, a second blog, and whether the design is rebuilt as it is or redesigned. You get the itemized estimate after a free audit of your Squarespace store. Your Shopify plan and any apps are billed by Shopify and the app vendors, not by us. If you want a new design rather than a copy of the current one, see what a Shopify store redesign costs.

Three things to check before you move
- Payment gateway. Shopify charges its own transaction fee when orders are paid through a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments. If you plan to keep your current processor, put that fee into the comparison.
- Member areas and bookings. Shopify has no built-in member areas or appointment scheduling. If paid memberships or bookings bring in a large share of revenue, the apps that replace them — and their monthly cost — belong in the comparison. We list them in the audit, not after launch.
- Active subscriptions. Whether subscribers can move without re-entering their card depends on your payment processor. We confirm it in the audit; if they cannot, the re-subscribe email is planned and tested before launch.
Who does the work
MILEDEVS is a Shopify Select Partner agency. The same team builds the theme, moves the data and sets up the redirects, so nothing gets lost between a “data migration” vendor and a separate theme developer. See the stores we have built in our portfolio — for example, the custom theme for LUNESI, a premium hair care brand that sells across the UK and EU in GBP and EUR — and what clients say in client reviews. If you would rather add a developer to your team than hand over a project, see how to hire a Shopify developer.

Squarespace to Shopify migration FAQ
How long does a Squarespace to Shopify migration take?
Most Squarespace stores move in 1–2 weeks. Larger catalogs, or stores with member areas, subscriptions or more than one blog, take 2–4 weeks. You get the exact timeline together with the estimate.
What does Squarespace not export?
Squarespace’s site export is a WordPress XML file with your layout pages, one blog with its posts, and text and image blocks. Store pages, product blocks, album, index and portfolio pages, video and audio blocks, drafts, style settings and custom CSS are not included, and only one blog can be exported. Products are exported separately as a spreadsheet of physical and service products, without featured images, variant images, image alt text or customer reviews. We move what the exports skip from the live site.
Will I lose my Google rankings when moving from Squarespace to Shopify?
Not if every indexed URL is redirected. A Squarespace product lives at an address like /shop/p/product-name, and blog posts often carry dates (/blog/2024/3/15/post-title); on Shopify the same product lives at /products/product-name and the post at /blogs/news/post-title. Without a 301 map these pages would return 404. We redirect each indexed product, category, blog and page URL, carry over titles and meta descriptions, resubmit the sitemap and watch Search Console for 404s after launch.
Will my customers have to reset their passwords?
Yes. No migration can move them, because passwords are stored encrypted. Customers either set a new password from an account invite, or — with Shopify’s new customer accounts — sign in with a one-time 6-digit code sent to their email and never need a password at all. Their imported order history is waiting in the account when they sign in.
Can I keep my domain registered with Squarespace?
Yes. We connect the domain to Shopify by updating its DNS records, so the registration can stay with Squarespace. Email on the same domain keeps working as long as its MX records are left as they are.
What happens to subscriptions, member areas and bookings?
They move to apps: subscription products to Shopify Subscriptions or another subscription app, member areas to a membership app and appointments to a booking app. We name the apps and their monthly cost in the audit, before you commit. Whether active subscribers can move without re-entering their card depends on your payment processor, and we confirm that in the audit too.
How much does a Squarespace to Shopify migration cost?
It is billed hourly from $30/hr, with a fixed estimate agreed before work starts. The hours depend on what the Squarespace exports leave behind — products with four or more options, download products, product forms, member areas, a second blog — and whether the design is rebuilt as it is or redesigned. The estimate comes after a free audit of your store.
