BigCommerce to Shopify Migration Service
We move BigCommerce stores to Shopify in 2–4 weeks for most stores: products with their variants and modifier options, customers, order history, blog posts and pages — plus a 301 redirect for every BigCommerce URL Google has indexed. Your BigCommerce store keeps taking orders until the domain switches to Shopify. The one thing no migration can move is customer passwords: customers set a new one from an invite, or skip passwords entirely with Shopify’s new customer accounts. Pricing is hourly from $30/hr, with a fixed, itemized estimate agreed after a free audit of your store.
BigCommerce and Shopify store the same things in different shapes. Categories nest on BigCommerce and become flat collections on Shopify. A BigCommerce product can carry more option types than Shopify allows, plus “modifier” fields that Shopify has no direct equivalent for. Product URLs sit at the root of the domain instead of under /products/. Import apps copy the data; the hours in a real migration go into what they skip — rebuilding the products that do not fit, and redirecting every old URL so your rankings and backlinks follow the store.
What moves from BigCommerce — and where it lands in Shopify
| On BigCommerce | On Shopify | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Products and variants up to 600 variants per product |
Products with up to 3 options and 2,048 variants each | Products with more than three option types are restructured — options combined or the product split — and listed in the audit before anything moves. |
| Modifier options text fields, checkboxes, dates, file uploads, numbers, pick lists — no SKU of their own, price adjusters allowed |
No modifiers: line-item properties on the product form; paid add-ons through a product options app | Every modifier is rebuilt and tested through cart and checkout, price adjusters included. |
| Categories, often nested /mens/shirts/ |
Collections (flat) plus navigation menus for the hierarchy | The category tree is rebuilt as collections and menus; every category URL gets a 301. |
| Brands /brands/… |
Product vendor plus a collection per brand | Brand pages keep their search traffic through 301s to the brand collections. |
| Custom fields | Product metafields, shown through theme blocks | Mapped field by field, including the ones your product pages display today. |
| Customers and customer groups | Customers with tags and segments; group pricing through B2B catalogs where your Shopify plan includes them, or a wholesale app | Group discounts and price lists are mapped in the audit, and you learn which plan or app they need before you commit. |
| Orders | Historical orders | Imported as past orders without emailing customers, so order history and customer lifetime value stay intact. |
| Blog posts and web pages /blog/…, /page-name/ |
Blog articles (/blogs/news/…) and pages (/pages/…) | Text, images, titles and meta descriptions moved; every old URL redirected. |
| Product reviews | A reviews app — Shopify retired its own Product Reviews app in 2024 | Reviews are exported and imported into the app you choose (Judge.me, Yotpo, Loox, Okendo), so product pages keep their ratings. |
| Stencil theme | Online Store 2.0 theme | Stencil templates do not run on Shopify, so the design is rebuilt — as it is, or redesigned if the theme is part of the problem. |
BigCommerce URLs vs Shopify URLs: the redirect map
Shopify’s URL structure is fixed. Whichever format your BigCommerce store uses — the default /product-name/, the long /products/product-name or a custom pattern — every page moves to a new address:
| Page type | Typical BigCommerce URL | Shopify URL |
|---|---|---|
| Product | /blue-linen-shirt/ | /products/blue-linen-shirt |
| Category | /mens/shirts/ | /collections/mens-shirts |
| Brand | /brands/… | /collections/brand-name |
| Blog post | /blog/how-to-style-linen/ | /blogs/news/how-to-style-linen |
| Web page | /shipping-returns/ | /pages/shipping-returns |
We crawl the live BigCommerce store and pull every URL Google has indexed from your Search Console, match each one to its Shopify address and import the list as 301 redirects. Two Shopify rules shape the plan. A redirect only works from a URL that returns 404 on Shopify — so the map goes live at the moment the domain switches, not before. And a store can hold up to 100,000 redirects (20 million on Shopify Plus), which covers even large catalogs with years of old URLs. After launch we resubmit the sitemap in Search Console and watch the 404 report for 30 days, so a missed URL gets its redirect in days, not months.
How a BigCommerce migration runs
- Audit and mapping (days 1–3). We inventory products, option types and modifiers, customer groups, apps, integrations and every indexed URL, and send you the migration map with a fixed estimate before any work starts.
- Staging build (weeks 1–2). The theme, settings, shipping and taxes are set up on a Shopify store your customers cannot see, while BigCommerce keeps selling.
- Data import and redirects (weeks 2–3). Products, customers, orders, content and reviews are imported and checked against BigCommerce counts; the 301 map is prepared and reviewed.
- Parallel QA (week 3). Checkout, shipping rates, taxes, modifier options, notification emails and integrations are tested with real test orders on desktop and mobile.
- Cutover (one evening). The domain moves to Shopify in your lowest-traffic window, the redirects go live, and a final import picks up the orders and customers created since the first one. BigCommerce stays frozen as a fallback for 30 days.
Your store never stops taking orders: the switch is a domain change, not a rebuild in place.
What a BigCommerce to Shopify migration costs
Pricing is hourly and transparent — from $30/hr, with a fixed estimate agreed before we start. The number of products matters less than how many of them need hands-on work: products with more than three option types, modifier fields with price adjusters, customer-group pricing, custom integrations, and whether the design is rebuilt as it is or redesigned. You get the itemized estimate after a free audit of your BigCommerce store. Your Shopify plan and any apps are billed by Shopify and the app vendors, not by us.
Moving from another platform — WooCommerce, Magento, Wix or Squarespace? See Shopify migration services for all the platforms we move stores from.
Three things to check before you move
- Payment gateway. Shopify charges its own transaction fee when orders are paid through a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments. If you plan to keep your current processor, put that fee into the comparison.
- Customer-group pricing. If price lists for wholesale or trade customers carry a large share of revenue, confirm which Shopify plan or app will run them before you commit. We check this in the audit, not after launch.
- Highly configurable products. If much of your catalog depends on four or more option types or on paid modifiers, the move is still possible, but the product structure changes. You see the new structure for your top-selling products before migration starts.
Who does the work
MILEDEVS is a Shopify Select Partner agency. The same team builds the theme, moves the data and sets up the redirects, so nothing gets lost between a “data migration” vendor and a separate theme developer. See the stores we have built in our portfolio and what clients say in client reviews. If your BigCommerce store runs on Shopify Plus-sized volume, see Shopify Plus agency pricing.

BigCommerce to Shopify migration FAQ
How long does a BigCommerce to Shopify migration take?
Most stores move in 2–4 weeks. A simple store — under 500 products with standard options — can be done in 1–2 weeks; large catalogs or stores with customer-group pricing take 4–6 weeks. You get the exact timeline together with the estimate.
Will my customers have to reset their passwords?
Yes. No migration can move them, because passwords are stored encrypted outside Shopify. Customers either set a new password from an account invite, or — with Shopify’s new customer accounts — sign in with a one-time 6-digit code sent to their email and never need a password at all. Their imported order history is waiting in the account when they sign in.
Will I lose my Google rankings when moving from BigCommerce to Shopify?
Not if every indexed URL is redirected. BigCommerce product URLs usually sit at the root of the domain (/product-name/), while on Shopify the same product lives at /products/product-name — without a 301 map every product page would return 404. We redirect each indexed product, category, brand, blog and page URL, carry over titles and meta descriptions, resubmit the sitemap and watch Search Console for 404s after launch.
What happens to product options and modifiers?
Variant options become Shopify options and variants — up to three options and 2,048 variants per product. Modifier fields such as engraving text, gift messages or file uploads become line-item properties on the product form; modifiers that add to the price need a product options app, because Shopify has no built-in price adjusters for them. Products with more than three option types are restructured, and you approve the new structure before the import.
Can you migrate order history and product reviews?
Yes. Orders are imported as historical orders without sending emails to your customers. Reviews are exported from BigCommerce and imported into a Shopify reviews app such as Judge.me, Yotpo, Loox or Okendo — Shopify retired its own Product Reviews app in 2024, so a reviews app is needed either way.
How much does a BigCommerce to Shopify migration cost?
It is billed hourly from $30/hr, with a fixed estimate agreed before work starts. The hours depend on how many products need restructuring, the number of modifier options and customer-group rules, custom integrations, and whether the design is rebuilt as it is or redesigned. The estimate comes after a free audit of your store.
Can you migrate from BigCommerce to Shopify Plus?
Yes. The process is the same. Shopify Plus raises the redirect limit to 20 million and adds Plus-only features such as checkout customization, which we set up as part of the move if you need them.
