Shopify Maintenance Plan Cost: Retainer Pricing, Hours & What Is Included
A Shopify maintenance plan costs $300–500/mo for essential care (5–10 hours), $750–1,250/mo for an actively trading store (15–25 hours), and $1,600–3,000/mo at scale (40–60 hours). A dedicated Shopify Plus retainer runs $2,000–6,000/mo. Every figure is simply hours × our $30–50/hr Shopify rate — a US or UK agency billing $90–150/hr charges $2,700–10,000/mo for the same scope, with a market average near $4,500/mo. Most agency "care plan" pages show three pricing tiers, a list of vague benefits like "peace of mind", and no hours. That makes the price impossible to check. This page does it the other way round: what each plan costs, how many hours you actually get, the exact break-even point where a retainer becomes cheaper than paying hourly, what pushes the number up — and the section nobody writes, the cases where you should not buy a maintenance plan at all.
What a Shopify maintenance plan costs in 2026
| Plan | Monthly cost | Hours/mo | Response time | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential care | $300–500 | 5–10 | 2 business days | Stable store, under ~$50k/mo revenue. App updates, theme updates, broken-link and checkout checks, monthly speed report, small copy and image edits. |
| Active store | $750–1,250 | 15–25 | 1 business day | Regular campaigns and launches. Everything above plus new sections, landing pages for promos, app integrations, Liquid fixes, staging for every change. |
| Scale | $1,600–3,000 | 40–60 | Same day, 4h for outages | High-traffic stores with a roadmap. Adds a named developer, planned feature work each sprint, performance budget, quarterly CRO review. |
| Shopify Plus retainer | $2,000–6,000 | 60–150 | Same day, 4h for outages | Plus merchants: checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions, B2B catalogues, multi-store. See Shopify Plus agency pricing for the full breakdown. |
There is no separate "agency margin" line in those numbers. A plan is hours at $30–50/hr, billed monthly instead of per task. If you want to sanity-check the rate itself against freelancers and US agencies, we published the full comparison on hiring a Shopify developer.
What is actually included in a maintenance retainer
Named plainly, because "ongoing support" means nothing on its own:
- Platform and app updates. Theme version updates, app version updates, deprecated API migrations before Shopify forces them, checking that nothing broke after each one.
- Uptime and checkout monitoring. Automated checks on the storefront and the checkout path. A broken checkout found at 2am is the single most expensive thing a maintenance plan prevents.
- Bug fixes. Liquid errors, layout breaks on new devices, app conflicts, failed webhooks and stuck order flows.
- Speed. A monthly Core Web Vitals report and a fixed budget of hours to defend it — because performance decays quietly with every app you install. Details on Shopify speed optimization.
- Content and merchandising edits. Banners, collections, seasonal sections, price and copy changes, new landing pages for campaigns.
- Backups and staging. Every change goes to a staging theme first, with a rollback point. On a retainer this is included, not an extra.
- A monthly report. Hours used, what shipped, what we recommend next month. If you never get one, you are not on a retainer, you are on a subscription.
Retainer vs hourly: where the break-even actually is
This is the question behind the price, so here is the arithmetic instead of a slogan. Ad-hoc hourly work with us is $30–50/hr with no commitment. A retainer discounts the rate roughly 10–15% and adds priority response, staging and monitoring at no extra charge.
| Your real monthly need | Hourly, ad-hoc | Retainer | Cheaper option |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2–4 hours, occasional | $60–200 | $300–500 | Hourly. Do not buy a plan yet. |
| 8–12 hours, regular | $240–600 | $300–500 | Break-even. Retainer wins on response time, not price. |
| 15–25 hours | $450–1,250 | $750–1,250 | Retainer, and the gap widens every month. |
| 40+ hours | $1,200–3,000 | $1,600–3,000 | Retainer — at this volume you need a named developer who knows the codebase. |
The honest rule of thumb: below roughly 10 hours a month, hourly is cheaper and we will tell you so. The reason to sign earlier is not cost, it is response time — hourly work gets scheduled, retainer work gets picked up the same or next business day.
What pushes the price up
- App count. A store with 25+ apps takes materially longer to update safely than one with 8. Every app is another thing that can break at checkout.
- A heavily customised theme. Custom Liquid without documentation costs more to maintain than a well-kept standard theme — this is the single biggest multiplier we see.
- Multi-store and multi-language. Each extra storefront adds real QA time, not a percentage.
- Shopify Plus features. Checkout extensibility, Functions and B2B logic need a developer who works with them weekly.
- Response-time guarantees. A 4-hour outage SLA means reserved capacity, and reserved capacity is the part you are really paying for.
- Feature work inside the retainer. "Maintenance plus a roadmap" is a different product from "keep it running" — that is the jump from Active store to Scale.
When you should not buy a maintenance plan
We would rather lose this sale than sell you the wrong month:
- Your store is new and barely trading. Under a few thousand dollars a month, pay hourly when something breaks. A plan is dead money.
- You need one specific project, not upkeep. A redesign, a migration or a new feature is scoped work — see Shopify store redesign cost. Do not fund it through a retainer, it is slower and less transparent.
- Your real problem is conversion, not breakage. If the store works but does not sell, maintenance changes nothing. That is a CRO audit — $450–900 for the express version, and far better value than a year of care plan.
- You already have an in-house developer. Then buy overflow hours, not a plan with monitoring you are duplicating.
- You are being quoted per-task by someone responsive and cheap. If that works, keep it. Come back when waiting becomes the expensive part.
How our retainers work
Month-to-month, cancel with 30 days' notice — no annual lock-in. Unused hours roll over one month (they do not accumulate forever; that would be a bank, not a plan). You get a shared board for requests, a named developer from the Active store plan up, and a monthly report of hours used against what shipped.
We have worked only on Shopify since 2019, as a Shopify Select Partner, across 50+ brands including CARBON (custom-built theme for a premium automotive parts brand) and RINFIT (Figma-to-live refinement and pixel-perfect QA). Full portfolio.
Getting a quote: send us your store URL and roughly what broke or changed in the last three months. We reply within 48 hours with a recommended plan, the hours behind it, and — if the numbers say hourly is cheaper for you — that instead. Request a maintenance quote.
FAQ
How much does a Shopify maintenance plan cost per month?
$300–500/mo for essential care (5–10 hours), $750–1,250/mo for an actively trading store (15–25 hours), $1,600–3,000/mo at scale (40–60 hours), and $2,000–6,000/mo for a dedicated Shopify Plus retainer. All of it is hours at $30–50/hr. US and UK agencies charging $90–150/hr quote $2,700–10,000/mo for the same scope.
Is a Shopify support retainer worth it versus paying hourly?
Below roughly 10 hours a month, hourly is cheaper — buy hours, not a plan. Between 10 and 15 hours it is break-even and you are really buying response time. Above 15 hours a month the retainer is cheaper outright, and above 40 hours you also need a named developer who already knows your codebase.
What is included in Shopify maintenance?
Theme and app updates, deprecated API migrations, uptime and checkout monitoring, bug fixes, a monthly Core Web Vitals report with hours reserved to act on it, content and merchandising edits, backups with staging for every change, and a monthly report of hours used against work shipped.
Do I need a maintenance plan for a Shopify store?
Not always. Shopify handles hosting, security patches and PCI compliance itself — that is what your Shopify subscription buys. A maintenance plan covers your layer: theme code, apps, integrations and the checkout path through them. If your store is new, stable and rarely changes, pay hourly when something breaks.
How fast do you respond to a broken checkout?
Four hours on the Scale and Plus plans, same or next business day on the lower tiers. Checkout outages jump the queue on every plan, including Essential care.
Can I change or cancel my plan?
Yes. Month-to-month with 30 days' notice, and you can move between tiers at any month boundary. If three months in a row come in under half the hours, we will tell you to downgrade.
