How the numbers are calculated
Profit per sale = selling price − (product cost + shipping + other costs + payment fees). Payment fees = selling price × transaction % + fixed fee. Margin is profit ÷ selling price; markup is profit ÷ total product cost. Most healthy Shopify stores aim for a 30%+ net margin after all fees.
FAQ
What's a good profit margin for a Shopify store?
It varies by category, but a net margin of 30–40% after product, shipping and fees is healthy for most DTC brands. Below 15% leaves little room for ads and returns.
What are Shopify's transaction fees?
With Shopify Payments the standard online rate is around 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction on the Basic plan (lower on higher plans). Using a third-party gateway adds an extra Shopify fee on top.
Does this include my marketing/ad spend?
No — this is per-order gross margin. Add your blended ad cost per order into "Other costs per order" to see your true contribution margin after acquisition.
